Few Facts on Child Abuse
- 77 cases of child abuse are made each hour.1
- 679,000 child victims of abuse and neglect found each year.1
(At the rate of 9.1 victims per 1,000 children in the U.S.) - Four children approximately die every day as a result of child abuse.2
- Per year 1,520 children die of abuse and neglect in the U.S. 1
(2.04 children per 100,000 approximately die of abuse and neglect per year.) - Three-quarters (73.9%) of all child fatalities were younger than 3 years.1
- Near about 50-60% of child fatalities due to maltreatment never got recorded as such on death certificates. 4
- It is shocking that the highest rates of child abuse occur under the age of one (23.1 per 1,000 children).1
- Approximately one-quarter (27.3%) of victims were under the age of 3 years. 1
- Approximately 70% of children that are victims of child abuse are under the age of four.2
- Above 90% of juvenile sexual abuse victims know their perpetrator.5
- It is shocking that child abuse occurs at every socioeconomic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and at all levels of education.1
