Lawsuit Alleges Toxic PFAS Contamination from Sewage Sludge Used in US Crop Farming
A lawsuit filed by environmental groups alleges that sewage sludge, containing toxic PFAS chemicals, has been unlawfully spread on US farmland as fertilizer, contaminating crops and posing health risks. The lawsuit targets the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for failing to regulate PFAS in sewage sludge used as fertilizer, despite evidence of its harmful effects on human health and the environment. PFAS chemicals, known as “forever chemicals,” persist in the environment and have been linked to various health issues, including cancer and developmental disorders. The plaintiffs argue that the EPA’s inaction violates federal laws intended to protect public health and the environment. This legal action underscores growing concerns about the widespread contamination of agricultural land and the need for stronger regulations to address the risks posed by PFAS chemicals.
