Chemical Hair Relaxer MDL No. 3060

Draftncraft | Blogs

Current Status (as of Early 2026)

Scientific studies suggest a link between chemical hair relaxer use and cancer. A 2022 NIH/NIEHS study found that women who frequently used chemical hair straightening products were 2.5 times more likely to develop uterine cancer compared to non-users. Additionally, many relaxers contain chemicals, such as formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing agents, which are recognized carcinogens. These findings underpin plaintiffs’ claims that prolonged exposure to these harmful chemicals may increase cancer risk. Major Global Settlement (Oct–Dec 2024), In late 2024, A Qualified Settlement Fund (QSF) was approved by the court to manage payouts. Funds are held in escrow and administered by special masters and lien administrators with oversight for issues like Medicare/Medicaid liens.

As of early 2026, the MDL 2846 litigation regarding C.R. Bard/Davol hernia mesh remains active, with thousands of cases still pending and new filings being accepted. A Qualified Settlement Fund (QSF) has been established to process claims, but payouts are expected to take several years. The MDL has not been formally closed, and the court continues to oversee unresolved cases.

Active Litigation: Thousands of cases still pending; new filings accepted.

Settlement Underway: MDL not formally dismissed; court continues to manage unresolved cases.
Qualified Settlement Fund (QSF) is processing claims; payouts will take years.

Scientific Evidence & Health Links

Scientific studies suggest a link between chemical hair relaxer use and cancer:

  • A 2022 NIH/NIEHS study found frequent users were 2.5× more likely to develop uterine cancer.
  • Chemicals in relaxers, like formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing agents, are known carcinogens

These findings support plaintiffs’ claims that prolonged exposure may increase cancer risk.
